Library of Congress acquires historic music collection
The Library of Congress announced yesterday that Universal Music Group has donated over 200,000 music recordings to the library, dating from the late 1920s through the late 1940s. Read the full press release here. Not only will these recordings be expertly preserved by the LOC; some will be made easily available:
The Library will stream recordings from the collection on a website to be launched in the spring. The additions of these recordings will significantly broaden the scope of the site and enhance the Library’s already unprecedented authority to stream commercially owned sound recordings online.
If you haven’t checked out the music offerings already available on the site, I highly recommend it. From www.loc.gov, click the Sound Recordings button to browse the collections.
