Tonight’s State of the Union Address

I watch the State of the Union address every year. I like hearing what the President has to say about how we’re doing and where we’re going. And I prefer to watch on TV to see the reactions from various members of Congress, the First Lady, the Cabinet, and the Supreme Court. Last year, I found several friends were watching and posting to social networking sites at the same time. You may think they (okay, we) need something better to do, but I’d call it civic engagement.

This year, instead of gossiping with my friends while watching, I have a chance for real civic engagement. The White House’s website has a page that will be providing background information on topics covered in the speech, in real time. There are already historical facts about the address and information about the First Lady’s guests for the evening. On the same page, there are opportunities to ask questions of White House officials immediately after the address, and others later in the week, including the President.

Maybe I will gossip with my friends AND use this site, so I can impress them with everything I learn.
